Nuclear Concerns
The InterChurch Uranium Committee Educational Co-op (ICUCEC) would like to alert the community about the Nuclear Information and Resource Centre's (NIRS) call to write the Bush administration with your concerns over the following:
- that three utilities - Entergy, Exelon and Dominion Resources - recently have applied for "Early Site Permits" to build reactors in Mississippi, Illinois and Virginia. NIRS and Public Citizen, amid other groups, intend to intervene and directly challenge all 3 permits.
- In mid-December, Louisiana Energy Services (LES) - the consortium dominated by the European firm Urenco - formally filed a license application to build a new private uranium enrichment plant in eastern New Mexico. NIRS intends to assist with an intervention in this proceeding.
- U.S.'s EPA (Environment Protection Agency) is working with the NRC & Dept. Of Energy to deregulate a portion of the nation's radioactive waste, allowing it to be disposed of in ordinary landfills or incinerators or "recycle" it for consumer goods. This would save millions of dollars for the nuclear utilities and government agencies but would unnecessarily expose millions of Americans to radioactive contamination.
For more information about any of these issues you can access the NIRS website.
