Bamboo Textiles No More 'Natural' Than Rayon

Clothing and textiles derived from bamboo must be labelled as rayon or viscose to counter a widely held but mistaken perception that the fabric is environmentally friendly, the Competition Bureau has ruled.

The bureau announced last week that labels and advertising have been corrected on 450,000 textile items, as well as on 250 websites that sell clothing and textile products.

The changes came after an investigation in the U.S. and Canada found that rayon derived from bamboo was no more natural or environmentally friendly than rayon derived from oak and beech trees.

Water as a Right, Conservation as a Responsibility

For the entire month of June 2009, Winnipeg's Kevin Freedman challenged himself to live on 25 litres of water per day or less while maintaining cleanliness and staying healthy. With cloth baths instead of showers, washing laundry by hand and reusing the water in the toilet and a toiling through a few other minor inconveniences, he was able to go the entire month using only 575 litres of water for all personal use.

The experiment is on again in March, 2010 to coincide with World Water Day on March 22nd. This time he will be taking pledges from people to conserve water as opposed to donating money. As he will live on 25 litres each day for that month, then each pledge will be to limit water use by 25 litres per day for that month. In Winnipeg if 1/4 of the population commits to this we can save 4 million litres per day! That is more than 100 million litres over the month!

Join with Kevin as he takes the project across Canada and around the world to promote water conservation. He is looking for people to challenge themselves and take pledges. contact Kevin at Water_Challenge@yahoo.com or join his facebook group http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=85421544276&ref=ts.

Climate Change, Oil Sands and the Potential to Build a Renewable Energy Society in Saskatchewan

February 10th, 7 pm, J.S. Wood Library

Peter Prebble, Director of Energy & Water Policy with the Saskatchewan Environmental Society, will review the enormous consequences of climate change, the long lived nature of greenhouse gases, and the outcome of the international negotiations at the Copenhagen Climate Change Conference. In that global context, he will then examine plans to develop an oil sands industry in Saskatchewan and argue for a much more cautious approach than the Saskatchewan government has taken to date. Saskatchewan should learn from Alberta’s serious mistakes and be prepared to reject unsustainable oil sands proposals.

The second half of Peter’s presentation will outline concrete steps Saskatchewan can take to sharply reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and create green jobs based on a renewable energy future. Peter will make the case for major Saskatchewan investments in energy efficiency, wind power, small scale hydro, co-generation of electricity, biomass development and solar energy. He will propose a new set of public policies aimed at building a renewable energy society in Saskatchewan. The policy proposals would bring sweeping and exciting change to Saskatchewan. Volunteer Opportunities

Ness Creek Eco-Village Coordinators

From Gary Smith: Now would be a perfect time for someone, or a small group of two or three people, to come in and move the Ness Creek Eco-Village to another level, or continue on in the same vain. The Ness Creek board is very open to having a continuation of the Eco-Village or something of that sort, but, if no one comes forth to coordinate it, they do not have the personnel to look after it. It is possible the Eco-Village will be vacant this year, or the space put to some other use.

This would be an opportune time to initiate change in the Eco-Village. Perhaps the name and general focus of the Eco-Village could be changed. For example, there has been a lot of interest in including a wellness aspect - having people involved who are practicing alternative therapies. (We have the names of several people who have expressed an interest in getting this going). Perhaps there could be discussion groups initiated. We believe that the sky is the limit here.

Brenda and Gary are, to a certain extent, willing to stay and assist the new coordinators as they take over their role. They could also help as liaisons to the board.

Time requirements are not huge. Starting in February, Brenda and Gary used to meet about every two weeks for an hour or two to discuss necessary 'tasks' between meetings. We have a fairly comprehensive system in place including: budgets, letters, promo material, surveys, final reports, and mailing lists (with past and potential participants).

The benefits of coordinating, besides the benefits of maintaining/creating a presence at Ness Creek, are free passes to the festival (for self and partner and if child care is necessary a pass for your child care provider), access to backstage, meal and beverage tickets, access to the volunteer party, and heaps of prestige.

To discuss this further, please feel free to contact: Gary Smith )email: smithgroenen@sasktel.net) or phone 664-2330; or Brenda Goldsworthy (email: bgoldsworthy@sasktel.net).
