The City of Regina has been involved in initiatives to reduce local impacts on the climate since 1990. It was the third municipality in Canada to set a greenhouse gas emission reduction target. In order to reduce Regina's impacts on climate, the Cool Down The City program was developed to educate the community about climate change. It encourages local action to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet the target set by City Council to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions with the community of Regina by 6% of 1990 levels by 2012.
The city of Saskatoon has released their 2014 "Our Environment" environmental leadership report. In this report discusses environmental issues related to land, air, water, and waste, and how the city plans on addressing these issues over the next decade. The land portion, amongst other things stresses the need for the city to limit it's economic footprint, which accounts for the population's consumption of food, transportation, housing, goods, and services in relation to the land area covered. The air portion addresses the need for responsible energy development, smarter energy use in the city, improved and more sustainable transportation, and air quality. The water portion discusses overall watershed health, drinking water, wastewater, and responsible city water use. Finally the waste section looks at city waste generation and waste diversion. This report is a significant step by the city of Saskatoon to clearly outline what needs to be addressed in the coming years and make plans for how they will go about it.
The City of Saskatoon is taking action on climate change and working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The City is a member of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Partners for Climate Protection Program to lower greenhouse gas emissions and improve the quality of life for Saskatoon residents.
