As the extent of long term environmental impacts of uranium mines is better understood, attention to old mines that have been abandoned has increased. While current legislation in Saskatchewan does not allow companies to abandon mines, a number were abandoned prior to enacting the legislation, especially in the Uranium City area. In a number of cases, responsibility for the site is unknown because the companies that once owned the mines no longer exist. In these cases, decommissioning and monitor become a public expense. Approximately 67 Saskatchewan abandoned mines sites are being investigated.
