Uranium mining is currently underway at three locations in Saskatchewan, Rabbit Lake, McClean Lake, and the McArthur River Mine / Key Lake Mill operation Construction work at the Cigar Lake mine-site began in 2005 with production planned for 2007, but the mine is currently undergoing a phased remediation program to restore the underground workings following a flood in October, 2006. Further water inflow occurred in 2008, and production is expected to be delayed until 2011 at the earliest. Cameco Corporation and AREVA Resources Canada Inc. (formerly COGEMA Resources) operate all of these mines and processing facilities.
Uranium is mined in Saskatchewan using either open pit or underground mining.
The WISE (World Information Service on Energy) website has an overview of all aspects of uranium mining and milling from a critical, environmental perspective.
