Background

Anticipated climate change impacts for the prairie region include an increase in drought conditions. Other concerns in relation to water in Saskatchewan include:
  • quality of rural drinking water
  • water diversion projects' impacts on wetlands
  • threats to riparian areas from agriculture and forestry
  • contamination of surface waters and its impact on wildlife
  • ground water quality
  • the threat of bulk water exports
  • privatization of municipal water delivery systems

In 2000, SEN's Water Working Group / Water Watch Committee obtained funding from the CUPE Environment Committee, CARDS, and the EcoSystem Monitoring Conference Fund for a project called How's The Water? Perspectives on Water and Rural Communities in Saskatchewan.

The result was a publication of the same name that puts all of these issues into the Saskatchewan context. The publication is a sort of "citizen's guide" to water issues, and includes contact information for follow-up action.
