Distributed Green Generation
SaskPower has adopted a strategy to meet new load growth over the next several years using what it calls Environmentally Preferred Power (EPP) from independent producers. This strategy is intended to encourage low environmental impact power, utilize waste streams as a fuel source, reduce SaskPower's emissions, monetize the value of low environmental impact power, and add small generation in step with SaskPower's load requirements.
A total of 45 megawatts (MW) of power will be contracted over 3 years. Twelve final proposals for the first 15 MW have been evaluated.
The EPP is an important part of the Saskatchewan's Green Power Portfolio, which includes wind power and community energy efficiency pilot projects.
SaskPower is also buying power from several independent power producers operating on a larger scale. These include the 11-megawatt (MW), 17 turbine Sunbridge wind power complex built by Suncor Energy and Enbridge at Gull Lake; the 210 MW Meridian natural gas cogeneration plant at Lloydminister; and the new 228 MW Cory Cogeneration Station at the Cory potash mine just outside Saskatoon.
